THE FACTS are...

Cardio respiratory fitness is an essential component of physical fitness and has grown to receive equal acclaim for improving cardiovascular health in both primary and secondary prevention. For health and fitness applications, the terms "cardio respiratory" fitness, "cardiovascular" fitness, and "aerobic endurance" fitness are synonymous. Cardio respiratory fitness best describes the health and function of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system and is related to cardio respiratory endurance, which is the ability to persist or sustain activity for prolonged periods. Cardio respiratory fitness also describes the capacity of the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood and the circulatory system's ability to transport blood and nutrients to metabolically active tissues for sustained periods without undue fatigue.

– Benefits of Cardio respiratory Exercise:

The numerous benefits of cardio respiratory are related to a variety of adaptive physiologic response to aerobic exercise. * According to the guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (6th ed.) Philadelphia: By Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, these include:

  • Resting heart rate
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Incidence of some cancers
  • Increased heart volume
  • Resting and maximum stroke volume
  • Maximum oxygen consumption
  • Capillary density and blood flow to active muscles
  • Lactate threshold
  • Total blood volume
  • Maximal ventilation
  • Lung diffusion capacity
  • Mobilization and utilization of fat
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Improved arterial endothelial function
  • Reduced all-cause mortality

Physiologic responses to training - such as an increase in body-fat utilization, a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, and an increase in maximal oxygen consumption - help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes by favorably modifying risk factors like obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, and elevated triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. When such risk factors are removed from a client's health profile, the client can attain an acceptable level of cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular health goes beyond merely attaining aerobic fitness. It defines the status of the heart muscle, its blood vessels, and the circulatory system it serves.

Acquiring and maintaining cardio respiratory fitness is one of the primary pathways to cardiovascular health. Cardio respiratory fitness also serves as a foundation for other fitness programs. The conditioning and health of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels are prime ingredients in the safety and performance of nearly all sports and recreational programs.

Activities such as tennis, golf, dancing basketball, volleyball, boxing, skating, skiing, and nearly all muscular strength-training programs will benefit from attaining acceptable levels of cardio respiratory fitness. Clients with adequate cardio respiratory fitness generally have more stamina, which translates to less fatigue and fewer risks for certain types of injuries

– What are the Health benefits?

  • Reduction in blood pressure
  • Increased HDL ('good') cholesterol
  • Decreased total cholesterol
  • Decreased body fat stores
  • Increased aerobic work capacity
  • Decreased clinical symptoms of anxiety, tension, and depression
  • Reduction in glucose-stimulated insulin secretion
  • Increased heart function
  • Reduction in mortality in post myocardial infarction patients
  • Prevention of Type 2 diabetes.*
